Science Week 2024 at iCRAG sees members of the public engage with iCRAG researchers and collaborators through the medium of art, interactive engagement tools, fossils, beach walks, television and geoscience career events.
On Sunday iCRAG is in Dundalk at the Louth Scinece Festival engaging audiences with audiences on raw materials and the green transition.
On Monday, 10 Things to Know About will be broadcast on RTE1 TV and the RTE Player with iCRAG's Dr Fergus McAuliffe returning to present Curious Chronicles. New for this year is the show's spinoff podcast hosted by Fergus, available to listen to here.
On Thursday Nov 14th iCRAG will be hosting European Geosciences Union (EGU) Geoscience Day during. The day sees 4 events taking place across Ireland engaging people with geoscience.
1. "Foram" art exhibition
Venue: National Maritime Museum, Dun Laoghaire, 1-1.45pm
"Foram" is a visual art event melding art, society and marine climate change together, with a public talk and panel discussion taking place in the National Maritime Museum of Ireland, Dun Laoghaire (booking link: https://lnkd.in/etcks793)
2. Intergenerational meitheal
Venue: Leenane Hotel, Co. Mayo, 11am-2pm
In the style of an Irish “meitheal” the geoscience meitheal will span generations, bringing primary school children, teachers and retired people together to share stories of the local geological landscape, placenames and myths about Leenane fjord.
3. Get into Geoscience
Venue: secondary schools in Dundalk: 9am-4pm
Led by iCRAG's Get into Geoscience programme, during the day the students will be led on a beach walk by iCRAG scientists where they will take sediment cores, learn about the plants of the area and learn about the water quality in the area.
4. Fossil Expo
Venue: Main campus, UCC, 10am-3pm, 4pm-7pm
The Cork Fossil Expo, led by Ireland's Fossil Heritage, will be a full-day event that will leverage the unique charisma of fossils to inspire curiosity in the geosciences.
On Saturday iCRAG raw materials researchers will be in Cork for Science at the Marina Market at the Marina Market, Cork, for an event welcoming families and curious minds of all ages to a day packed with hands-on discovery and excitement.
