Biography
Dr Guarav Tomar is a postdoctoral research associate in iCRAG. I work with Prof. Chris Bean at DIAS. Before that I was at IPGP as a PhD student with Prof. Satish Singh and Jean-Paul Montagner and was working on Application of interferometric methods to passive and active data sets from the North Sea. I graduated from Banaras Hindu university (BHU) Varanasi with a master degree in geophysics. At DIAS my research focuses mainly on the near-surface modelling using reflection and passive data sets.
The objective of a geophysicist is to get the information about the sub-surface structure of the Earth. My research focuses on the structure of the Earth at shallow depths which can be studied using seismic (underground) waves. I use numerical simulation, which is similar to running a computer calculation, to interpret seismic information. This will improve the quality of seismic images so that we can get a better picture of the subsurface.
Project title: A rock physics perspective on the factors controlling poor sub-basalt imagery on continental margins
Technical description
At DIAS, my research focuses mainly on the near-surface modelling using reflection and passive data sets. I am working on sub-basalt imaging problem. Sub-basalt is highly heterogeneous not only at its surface but also from inside and it also incoherently scattered. In the seismic images, we cannot see underneath it because of high impedance contrast. I am doing synthetic modelling that can help us to understand the heterogeneity on seismic wave-field due to sub-basalt.
