Biography
Dr Haleh Karbala Ali is a postdoctoral researcher working in the iCRAG Geohazards Research Spoke under the supervision of Prof. Chris Bean from Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). Haleh graduated with a PhD in Petroleum Exploration Engineering in 2018 from Amir kabir University of Technology (Tehran Poly Technique). Prior to joining iCRAG, Haleh worked for five years as seismic data interpreter at National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
Transport Infrastructure Ireland, our industrial partner in iCRAG has stated a primary need to identify fluid transport conduits in karst and how karst properties change through the season. My research focusses on developing innovative ways to track changes of kasrt properties with time.
Technical description
Karst environments change with time due mainly to water ingression and non-elastic changes in moduli under long term loads. Here I try to develop new methods for determining the temporal variations of moduli for 24/7 for several months. Data will be streamed in real time so changes can be monitored remotley. By repeating seismic shots and recording on a nearby seismometer, Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI) is applied to determine velocity changes and further studies may be carried out to derive average moduli changes for the rock volume.
