Biography
Hilde Koch graduated with a Masters degree in Geoscience at the University of Tuebingen (Germany) in 2016. She joined iCRAG in September 2016 and obtained her PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2021. Now she is an iCRAG postdoctoral researcher in the raw materials spoke under the supervision of Murray Hitzman. Hilde is based in University College Dublin and coordinates the Geochemistry platform across the centre.
For her BSc and MSc, she specialised in isotope geochemistry (H, O, Fe and Cr isotopes). Now her research focuses on the chemistry of Irish Mississippian volcanic ash layers and the Carboniferous limestones in between. Hilde investigates how they could be used as stratigraphic and tectonic markers relevant for the zinc – lead deposits of Ireland. Furthermore, she works on a newly in situ sampling technique, which employs the laser ablation unit as a milling device. Ahead of laser micro-sampling, potential sampling targets are mapped by LA-ICP-MS for their trace element distributions. Sampled material will be subsequently analysed using a quadrupole ICP-MS. It guarantees clean physical extraction of fossils from their surrounding matrix and high spatial resolution sampling down to 2 x 2 μm. Her research involves
- Solution ICP-MS high
- Precision trace element geochemistry
- LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping
- LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon geochronology
