Biography

Dr John Conneally is a Post-Doctoral Researcher within the 3-D Ireland platform at iCRAG. John Completed a PhD on the kinematics of segment boundaries on normal faults, with the Fault Analysis Group in UCD in 2014. Following completion of his PhD John worked as a geologist in the mining industry in Ireland. In 2017 John joined iCRAG to work on the 3-D modelling of the Irish onshore this project will use a range of geological and geophysical datasets to increase our understanding of the Irish onshore geology and the associated mineral deposits.

Base metals are an essential component of many materials and can also be found in many consumer products. Demand for base metals remains high and many large mines have recently closed or are nearing the end of their lives. The Irish midlands is a globally important producer of base metals and the mines in this region have been a major contributor to Ireland’s economy. My work involves building 3D models of the known mineral deposits in Ireland, this will lead to a greater understanding of how these deposits form, and will be a major help in finding new deposits.

Project title: 3D Model Platform

Technical description

The Irish midlands Zn-Pb ore field contains a large number of deposits. Exploration and mining activity at the locations of these deposits has led to the generation of a substantial geological dataset, comprised mostly of borehole, outcrop and underground mapping data, for much of the Irish midlands, however the majority of these data are in the top 750m -1Km. Recently there has been a shift in exploration targeting towards deeper targets (Ca. 1.5 – 3 kms), this has required the introduction of new geophysical techniques such as reflection seismic profiling to image the geological structures at depths of 1-2km. My work will involve integrating these datasets with the available geological mapping and other available geophysical datasets i.e. Tellus, in order to build geologically robust 3D models of the geological structure of the Irish Midlands.
