Our marine research aims to make Ireland’s offshore environment a test bed and natural science laboratory for innovative and novel technologies in the marine sector.
Key to safeguarding the geomarine environment is a reduction in the need to use high energy, and expensive, seismic surveys. Our research instead uses the natural acoustic noise in the environment as an imaging tool. Existing datasets (e.g. INFOMAR and European Space Agency Sentinel) are being integrated, updated and interpreted. Combining these datasets and methods provides a full inventory of the resources and natural hazards that exist in the Irish Continental Shelf. In addition, new remote sensing software tools for industry are in development which will support the economic development of Ireland’s offshore regions, provide a new suite of decision making tools for industry and policy makers, and provide baselines for assessing ‘Good Environmental Status’ offshore Ireland.
