Congratulations to Dr Anna Bidgood of iCRAG at UCD on winning a 2022-2023 UK Fulbright scholar award. Anna will spend time at the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington DC where she will be conducting experimental research to determine how metals, such as technology metals cobalt and nickel, are mobilised and concentrated to aid predictions as to where these metals might be found in nature.
Dr Bidgood is a geoscientist with interests in sustainably-sourced technology metals which are critical for the production of low carbon technologies needed to help decarbonise our society.
Commenting on the award, Dr Bidgood said: “I am delighted to be selected as a UK Fulbright All Disciplines scholar for 2022-2023. I will be spending 12 months at Carnegie institute for Science in Washington DC where I will be conducting experiments looking at the mobility of metals in fluids, including battery metals such as cobalt and nickel. Cobalt and Nickel are important components of batteries needed to help decarbonise our society. The results of these experiments have the potential to be applied to natural systems where cobalt and nickel hare found in high concentrations, allowing us to understand how such concentrated deposits form and where we might find more. I am particularly excited to explore some of the US’s amazing national parks and meet people from around the country.”
