Overview
A secure and efficient supply of water, energy, and minerals is necessary for the continued development of both the Irish and European economies. Mineral products are critical for the technologies that allow us to deal with environmental change, especially the critical minerals required for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. In the short term identifying additional domestic sources of offshore natural gas would provide Ireland a secure indigenous bridge to a fully renewable energy future, while geological characterisation of depleted gas fields may allow their use as repositories for captured carbon dioxide.
