Biography

Prof. Walsh is Co-Principal Investigator on the supply of raw materials research challenge, and iCRAG’s work on 3D modelling and public perception of geosciences. His research focus is on the geometry and growth of faults, and on the impacts of faults and fractures on fluid flow. John is Professor of Structural Geology at UCD and co-director of the Fault Analysis Group in the School of Earth Sciences. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, served on the editorial boards of five journals, including Geology and the Journal of Structural Geology, and acted as distinguished lecturer for the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). In 2015 John became the first Irish Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London.

Active iCRAG projects:

  • Structural evolution of Lower Carboniferous faulting and its links to fluid flow and mineralization - Dr Koen Torremans
  • Geometry and nature of inversion structures in the Irish Orefield and their impact on mineral deposits and associated mineralisation
  • Quantitative investigation of potential geothermal systems in Ireland - Dr Sarah Blake
  • Commercialization of natural gas hydrates: geological attributes, environmental factors, and new exploration and production technology - Dr Srikumar Roy
  • The Geology of the Shale Gas Basins onshore Ireland - Jiulin Cole Guo
  • 3D Modelling of the Irish Carboniferous Basins and Associated Zn-Pb Deposits
  • 3D Model Platform - John Guven
  • 3D Model Platform - Dr John Conneally
