Today iCRAG, the SFI Research Centre in Applied Geosciences, launches the Geoscience for Sustainability PhD Programme which will see the recruitment of 33 fully-funded PhD positions across the Centre’s research challenges and platform technologies.
iCRAG's Geoscience for Sustainability PhD programme is an ambitious new research programme that prioritises PhD research positions which aim to deliver innovative science and technologies to better understand our planet, sustainably manage our natural resources and protect the environment.
The programme will create a talent pipeline of early career researchers across multiple fields of sustainability and geoscience research such as climate science, soil science, energy transition, marine science, sustainable infrastructure, environmental science and social science.
The PhD positions will be based in University College Dublin, NUI Galway, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and Maynooth University. All PhD positions will be advertised during July and August 2022 and successful candidates will start no later than January 1st 2023.
Commenting on the launch of the Geoscience for Sustainability Programme iCRAG Director, Prof Murray Hitzman, said: "The Geoscience for Sustainability PhD Programme is strategically central to iCRAG's goal of creating solutions for a sustainable society. The 33 PhD researchers will join our large team of multidisciplinary researchers working at the cutting edge of geoscience research.”

iCRAG Deputy Director Dr Shane Tyrrell welcomed the announcement of the programme: “Geoscience plays a central role in understanding and addressing many of the key sustainability challenges facing natural resources, the environment and society. The Geoscience for Sustainability PhD programme will accelerate our scientific understanding of these issues and deliver impact for Ireland.”
