iCRAG, the SFI Research Centre in Applied Geosciences proudly endorses Geoscience in Action: Advancing Sustainable Development.
Geoscience in Action: Advancing Sustainable Development is a freely-available resource from UNESCO and AGU that offers a practical roadmap to illustrate how geoscientists can apply their talents and skills to solving the world’s environmental, social, and economic problems.
The report maps geoscience skills to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through detailed case studies. Geoscience in Action presents three Sustainability Dimensions — People, Planet, and Prosperity — highlighting the positive impact geoscience has on individuals, physical systems, and social systems.
iCRAG Business Development Manager Emer Caslin, who assisted in the publication of the report, said:
“Geoscientists have an opportunity to contribute much more towards the achievement of strong sustainable development solutions to many of the world’s greatest social, economic and environmental problems. Geoscience in Action provides a framework with global examples capturing the diversity of initiatives in which geoscientists are engaged across the sustainability spectrum, from water resource management, reducing natural hazard risk, and accelerating decarbonization to confronting gender inequities and discrimination.
This report offers a value proposition we hope will help inspire many in forthcoming generations to pursue careers in geoscience and motivate current geoscientists to redirect their research and practice to new, transformative endeavours that confirm the discipline’s significance to the 2030 Agenda.
