On Wednesday 15th November during Science Week, iCRAG hosted its first foray into the world of science and the arts. The event, entitled, The Bone Vault: The Poetry and Palaeolontology of Heaney's Bog Bodies, examined the different understanding we gain when a poet describes a fossil or an archaeological site, rather than a palaeontologist or archaeologist. Through the lens of Heaney’s poetry on bog bodies, the palaeontologist Prof. Michael Stephenson of the British Geological Survey, in conversation with the poet Prof. Iggy McGovern, compared the methods of the poet and the palaeontologist, outlining the case for combining poetry and science to deliver greater understanding of the natural world. Featuring bog bodies from the National Museum of Ireland, the event offered a unique insight into stories of science, poetry and human history. This event was run in collaboration between the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences, the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology, and Poetry Ireland.
