Project title: Implementation of Re-Os geochronology isotope techniques and application to commercially relevant materials, such as hydrocarbon-bearing black shales and sulphide ore bodies
Researcher: Dr David van Acken
Over the past decades, the Re-Os isotope system has been developed as a useful tool to date commercially relevant samples such as hydrocarbon-bearing shales and ore deposit sulfides. With the focus on the Irish energy and mining industry, establishing Re-Os isotope analytical methods within the ‘Enabling Methodologies’ challenge of iCRAG will provide valuable data support for other projects within iCRAG and industry partners, by providing geochronological and geochemical data relevant to understanding ore deposit and hydrocarbon formation.
The aim of this project is to set up Re-Os sample processing and measurement methods in the iCRAG/NCIG laboratories at UCD and use these methods for small projects dating sample suites from the energy security and raw materials challenges.
