Project Title: The Role of the Microscopic Properties of Aggregates in Controlling Asphalt Mixture Durability and Sustainability in the Irish Road Network
Researcher: Dr Richard Unitt
This research examines the affinity between stone aggregates and their bituminous binders. In conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Pavement Management Services Ltd (PMS) we are examining both laboratory constructed asphalt mixes and selected in-service mixes to determine the stability of the bonds (adhesion, cohesion, electrostatic, interlocking) between the stone aggregate and the most commonly utilised bituminous mixes. Laboratory mixes will be aged using a MiST (Moisture Induced Stress Tester) machine and the critical interface will be examined using Raman spectroscopy, SEM+EDS and FTIR.
